Why Pilates Uses Fewer Repetitions (And Why That Builds Better Strength)

Why don’t we do more reps in Pilates?

This is a question I’m often asked by private Pilates clients here in West London. If you’ve ever wondered the same thing, let me try to explain.

In gym-based training, repeating the same exercise to the point of fatigue makes sense - the goal is to tire a muscle. In Pilates, the focus is different. I’m training how you move, not how hard you’re working.

By doing fewer repetitions and moving on, we avoid fatigue that can make form slip, and instead get more benefit by challenging the body in different ways across the session.

When fatigue sets in, the body starts to compensate, usually through the lower back, so we need to be particularly careful of that. You will still build strength, just in a way that’s kinder on your joints and far more transferable to everyday movement.

Even the most basic exercises can feel surprisingly intense when done with intention:
the intention to lift up and out of the hips,
to feel the energy between fingers and toes,
to reach the leg away longer rather than higher,
to keep the pelvis settled,
to draw everything gently back towards the midline,
to lengthen through the arms rather than grip.

In this way, the core is always working. Through good alignment, it supports every movement, not just the “core exercises”. You become stronger from the inside out.

What this means for my Pilates classes in West London

This approach is exactly how I teach in my group and private Pilates session..

My Tuesday and Thursday classes are more challenging and progressive, designed for people who want to build strength, control and confidence in their bodies, without punishing workouts or rushing through movements.

My Friday class is slower and more accessible, ideal if you’re newer to Pilates, returning after a break, or want to move with more care while still building strength and mobility.

Whichever class you choose, the focus is the same: thoughtful movement, intelligent progressions, and strength that supports you in real life. Energising, not exhausting.

If this way of moving resonates with you, I’d love to welcome you into class.
